I've Been Knocking on Doors
I went out last weekend and started meeting some of our new neighbors in Vistancia. I knocked on about 75 doors, left a church brochure and talked with over 20 families. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. Even though most of them already had a church home, they were all pleased to have another church in the area and wished me well. Two families were especially receptive, saying they were actually looking for a church and would definitely check us out when we get started. It was a hot work but I thought it was well worth my time and effort.
When I planted my first church in Surprise some dozen years ago I also went out knocking on doors. Over the course of a couple of months I knocked on over 1,000 doors. A few of the families I met later became church members. I didn’t go out with the intent of converting anyone. I just wanted to introduce myself to my community and let them know about my new church. Although newspaper advertising and large-scale mailings can reach many more people, I’ve always felt that there is nothing more effective than a personal visit. Many people have told me that I was the first pastor who ever called on them in their home.
My goal is to knock on at least 1,000 doors between now and when we launch our church in late October. And of course I plan to call on those who make their first visit to Spirit Song and experience worship with us. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, encouraged his pastors to “visit in the homes.” I intend to follow that directive and to be actively engaged in our community.
Blessings,
Steve

Steve, It appears you've jumped in with both feet. We pray you have great success.
We're going to join Desert Skies UMC nest Sunday. You probably know Dan Hurlbert. We are excited because they have an active group dedicated the the UMC Social Principles and will we hope it will lead to a lot of dialog in church on social issues.
Good luck,
Roger

Hi Steve,
I didn't realize you were still keeping up with your blogs! I've read and enjoyed the back issues, though I thought I would comment on this one in particular. I think it's wonderful and inspiring that you are going out and personally meeting so many families. You certainly made a positive impression on our family when you came to our home! But remember that a church is made up of a body of believers, and we should be doing our part too. It's a great witnessing opportunity to train and send other believers out in to the community and let them connect with their neighbors as well. Plus, it will lighten the load for you.
As a side note...we came upon Spirit Song not because of meeting you...but because a sweet, older gentleman found a handicapped parking place for my mom - when we were on our way to another church event!
