The United Methodist Church is Purple

I think it’s interesting that with religion becoming a hot topic in the presidential race, that two of the top Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, are both United Methodist, as is the president himself, George W. Bush. It just proves a point I’ve made many times in the United Methodist churches I’ve served – that the United Methodist Church is the one place where committed Christians can and do disagree on almost every social and political issue.

I love that the United Methodist Church is purple – not red like so many fundamentalist churches or blue as some would claim. I love the fact that you can be a United Methodist and not have to be in lock-step with every other United Methodist. I appreciate the fact that in every United Methodist church you’ll find good Christian believers on every side of every issue, and who are willing to agree to disagree in love.

I love the United Methodist slogan: “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors” for what it says about us a church – that we are open to discussion, we are open to new ideas and new people, and that we are a compassionate people who open their hearts and their wallets to help those in need. I love the United Methodist Church because, despite our faults, it continues to take seriously its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

That’s why I think it’s important to keep planting new United Methodist churches. We’re a different kind of church, one that is open to all people who want to grow closer to God and to others. We won’t tell you what to believe or how to vote. We will, however, help you find your way and walk beside you on your faith journey. I hope you’ll join us.

Blessings,

Steve
