There Are Some Perks

There are some perks to starting a new church. Sure its hard work, and there’s pressure to survive, and there are worries about money and how (and if) you will find people who will share your vision about this new church and eventually do some of the heavy lifting, and so on …  Actually it does sound pretty daunting, which is why so few pastors are willing to do it. But as I said, there are some perks, at least in the first few months.

First, my office is in my home. Which means no daily commute, no office hours and it means that a lot of the time I can be at work in jeans and a t-shirt. Second, my time is very flexible. Which is great because it allows me to spend quality time with my grandkids. I pick up my five year old granddaughter every day at 4:30 from her after-school program. I bring her home, give her a snack and either set her up with crayons and coloring pages, or I turn her cartoons on, or I give up my computer so she can go to some of her favorite websites. That’s right, she’s only five and she is about as computer-savvy as they come. Her eleven year old brother comes over from their house (which is only a couple of blocks away) after doing his chores and they keep themselves busy until their mom picks them up after work, usually around six.

I feel very fortunate to have this time with them while they’re growing up (and they do grow up fast!). I drive Sierra to her cheer class after school on Tuesdays, take Cody to his karate classes, share an interest with him in magic tricks, and generally enjoy being a part of their everyday lives. I’ve attended Grandparents Day at Sierra’s kindergarten class and taken them on all kinds of little trips. I’m sorry their dad, who is in the Air Force and due back soon from a nine-month tour overseas, can’t enjoy this time with them. But I’m doing my best to fill in.

Blessings,

Steve
