Creative Spirituality

We believe in the power of the arts to touch the heart and soul of God’s people. When it comes to building a church that honors God, the arts must be embraced and supported as a vital component to the life of the church. It is our mission to assist each person to discover and to excel in their gifts, to discover their "spirit song", so that they may truly glorify God.

We believe that when music, drama and the visual arts are all working together, along with dynamic teaching, God will unleash His power in dramatic and life-changing ways. When we allow our natural, God-given and Spirit-led creativity to be expressed in our worship and in our ministries, God will honor and bless those efforts. After all, He is the Creator through us. And when He creates visual art through us, art that can be used for His glory – whether it’s a beautiful painting or a poignant video – such art is a holy thing which we should embrace and celebrate.

There are many books that speak to this new awareness of the arts in worship and in our spiritual lives. Here are two that we recommend...

"Creative Spirituality: The Way of the Artist" by Robert Wuthnow (c) 2001.
In this book the author looks at the spiritual lives and practices of several artists who have struggled to find a place in the religious world but whose art has not only expressed their own spiritual quest but has been a light to others.

"Art in Service to the Sacred" by Catherine Kapikan (c) 2006 Abingdon Press.
In her book the author encourages congregations to take seriously the role of the visual arts in worship and in the broader life of the church.
